How to grow the best potatoes at home.

Find a sunny position with good drainage and a spade depth of topsoil.
Dig the soil deeply at late winter and mix through well rotted compost or any other manure available.
When the soil warms up (13 degrees) in spring, form a trench about 150 mm deep and spread a bit of complete fertilizer along it, about a handful per metre.

Cover with 50 mm of soil and lay potato seed pieces 25 cm apart along the trench. Fill the trench to level. Expect to see plants emerge in 4-6 weeks.

As plants grow, hill up some soil around the stems and keep weeds away. Make sure the plants never dry out, but don’t over water either.

After three months, have a scratch underneath and expect to find spuds. Although they are good to use immaturely, full maturity happens when the plants agsa and shrivels and dries up and the potato skins are firm.
